US Navy accepting pilots with surgically corrected eyes

Not only that, they’re encouraging the practice. They perform PRK instead of Lasik, because they worry that the flap cut during lasik could come loose during high G combat.

More F-22 woes

Spending 5 hours in an F-22 Raptor sounds like a good idea. Unless you’re on the ground. And the cockpit won’t open. Eventually you cut it open with a chainsaw. Yay U.S. technology!

USN developing plane that launches from submarines

It’s called the Cormorant and the initial development has been given to Lockheed Martin’s Skunkworks. Because nuclear subs don’t have much to do in today’s environment they want to modify the launchers to eject these aircraft. This obviously comes with problems… The Skunk Works’s answer is a four-ton airplane with gull wings that hinge around [...]

Unusual technical WWII images

In the Second World War people at home with loved ones spread far away around the world with the forces were fed a diet, often government backed, of “how it works” or “how we will win” technical information leaflets. Very often these would have contained superb cut away and sectioned diagrams, showing the “insides” or [...]

Britain to replace nuclear capability?

In an interview with the Guardian, Reid, the UK Defence Secretary, indicates that it is time to replace Trident in order to be able to present a credible nuclear capability against the evolving new and potentially rogue nuclear powers (India, Pakistan, N. Korea among others). Which goes to show, allthough jointness and mobility is the [...]

It’s an argument that’s been raging in every navy of the world for centuries at least, and here is another new contender for the lots of little ships argument – it looks cool, but didn’t they learn anything from the destroyers in WWII?!

It’s an alien Ray Gun

This baby is a good old fashioned Ray Gun (we don’t need no frickin’ lasers!) which heats human skin to unbearable pain within 5 minutes without burning it… ADS systems are a new class of nonlethal weaponry using 95 GHz-millimeter-wave directed energy. This technology is capable of rapidly heating a person’s skin to achieve a [...]
